Every grade participated in the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action at Inspired Teaching Demonstration School.

On Thursday, Feb. 7th, Center for Inspired Teaching held their second annual Intergenerational Speak Truth for the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. Students and community members from across the DC metro area gathered at Dunbar High School (DCPS) to engage in conversation focused on current social justice issues. 

All students and staff at Inspired Teaching Demonstration PCS were invited to contribute to a Black Lives Matter mural as part of the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. Each grade level responded to a different prompt on colored post-its that were then placed on the banner.

Students learn how words can be used as a way to reflect and inform others of issues of society.

Students at Noyes Elementary School (DCPS) learned about go go during Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action with a Teach the Beat lesson from international go-go artist, William “Ju Ju” House on Tuesday, February 5.

Parents of children in a pre-K class at Anne Beers Elementary School (DCPS) were featured guest readers (part of the Teaching for Change Roving Readers program) in honor of Black History Month and Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action.

Students from the Culture at Home homeschool community met at the National Gallery of Art for a tour of the exhibit Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940-1950, then engaged in group discussion, photo analysis, a poetry slam and a writing assignment inspired by the book 12 Million Black Voices by Richard Wright.

As a part of Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, high school students at EL Haynes Public Charter High School, learned about social justice activists. They used the Teaching for Change lesson Resistance 101.

Second graders at KIPP DC Lead Academy and their teacher Trisha Boyd, participated in Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action by reading Child of the Civil Rights Movement by Paula Young Shelton.
