On February 2nd, educators and school leaders at Two Rivers PCS in Washington, D.C. organized an all-school virtual community meeting. The group celebrated with the themes of Black excellence, joy, freedom, and culture throughout the meeting. Throughout the event, students and school staff shared greetings, affirmations, and discussed:

  1. What does Black Lives Matter mean to you?

  2. What is Black joy?

Members of the school community (teachers, students, librarians, and other school staff) recorded their responses which were compiled in a video. Below are some of the powerful anecdotes shared:

Black joy is . . .

. . . loving yourself and your culture

. . . being unapologetically proud of your melanated greatness

. . . celebrating Black excellence and uplifting Black power

“I believe we need to keep fighting for equal justice for all and to end systemic racism & to establish a world where you don’t have to explain why Black Lives Matter”
