Looking for (paid) summer opportunities? If you’re a 3rd-12th grade educator in DC, the Teach the District program might be just the right fit! This 5-day immersive teacher professional development program seeks to bring local history to life and share the importance of civic engagement through exclusive behind-the-scenes access to local cultural heritage organizations. 

WHO CAN APPLY?

Teach the District is designed for educators in Washington, DC who work in 3rd-12th grade classes and want to incorporate local history into what they teach.

While most applicants are from humanities classrooms, Teach the District welcomes math, science, and other disciplines, along with social studies, language arts, fine/performing arts, ESL, ELL, SPED, and GT classrooms. We also encourage applications from those who teach as school librarians and media specialists.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

Through the Teach the District program, stories of local Washington are interwoven into a free teacher-professional development program that encourages civic engagement through history-informed action.

You will receive new skills and perspectives, understandings of the cross-curricular value of local history, and gain models for engagement with local institutions. 

The application-based five-day summer workshop connects you with collections representatives and museum educators to develop a classroom resource to implement with your students. The resource should incorporate materials and ideas shared during the program and can be used on its own or as inspiration for a student-led, teacher-directed civic engagement project that addresses an issue in your community. The workshop also features exclusive site visits and hands-on inquiry-based learning activities. 

Participants receive a $600 stipend at the completion of the workshop and deliverables. 

The 2024 Teach the District summer workshop will be held in person from July 22-26, 2024, from 10am to 3pm daily. Mornings are spent onsite at the DC History Center, and afternoons at locations around the city. A buffet lunch is provided each day.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until June 30, 2024 at 11:59pm. Best consideration will be given to educators who apply by Sunday, April 27, 2024. 

Please note, Teach the District will reach max capacity with 20 participants. Once 20 participants are accepted, applications will close.
