People's History of Black Muslims in the U.S.

Fifty seventh and eighth grade students at McKinley Middle School (DCPS) learned about the history of Black Muslims in the U.S. in a lesson led by Alison Kysia on Tuesday, Feb. 5 for Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. The lesson is designed to combat Islamophobia by sharing stories that challenge uni-dimensional caricatures of Muslims. The roles in the mixer activity are all African American, which not only helps participants explore Islam in the United States, but also advances themes in Black history.
