The Beat Keeps Going: Teach the Beat at Capital City Go-Go

Teach the Beat joined DC Public Library and Capital City Go-Go in the basketball team’s “The Beat Keeps Going” game, held on November 15, 2022,  in celebration of #GoGoPreservationWeek.
Teach the Beat welcomed game attendees to participate in a Go-Go Gallery Walk, sharing their memories of go-go while exploring the history of go-go culture. Many of the adult attendees reviewing the Gallery Walk expressed gratitude to see highlights of their growing up displayed in this venue.

Throughout the game, the younger attendees were invited to learn from legendary go-go and founding Teach the Beat teaching artist, JuJu! Timid at first, several children were encouraged to give JuJu’s drum set a tap or two and make their own beats.

JuJu signed autographs and participated in the Go-Go’s “Match that Beat” game. JuJu might have had the upper hand in this fun timeout activity where an audience member is selected to match the beat of music that is being played, using a conga drum.  JuJu and Teach the Beat were also featured during a video montage of Go-Go Sound of Summer, a three-part series that explores different facets of go-go music and culture, breaking down the foundations of the music, showcasing its history in D.C., and celebrating its broader influence on other music genres, popular culture, political movements, and more.

Check out this tweet thread of in-game highlights.

Thank you to the Capital City Go-Go for inviting Teach the Beat to participate in this event and showcase our work for this vibrant D.C. audience.
